Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Scholarship Information?
The first question almost everyone interested in the FSU Roller Hockey Program asks, is whether or not you can get a scholarship to play college roller hockey - at FSU or otherwise. The answer is pretty much no, unfortunately. There are now only a few scholarships around the country that are sponsored by different companies or regional leagues. Typically, these are small and do not cover the costs of attending school. It would appear that more progress is being made to make such scholarships a bit more common, but it will likely be a while before schools around the country can offer full athletic scholarships for college roller hockey. At this time, there are a few programs that offer "educational assistance" to some of their players, but this "assistance" is just that, assistance.

FSU does have a program for out of state students, that allows active members of the executive board on a sports club team to pay in-state tuition. If this would benefit you, contact us for more information. If you want to learn more about the cost of attending FSU, check out the Office of Admissions and Scholarships at FSU.
So if it isn't free, how much does it cost to play?

The typical player fee will be in the range of $700 per player. This fee will vary based on the number of tournaments we compete in and the amount of travel required. If you have played travel hockey before...this should be something you are all too familiar with!

HOWEVER, the team has scheduled several fundraisers throughout the season to help offset this expense. We have also contacted several companies in attempt to gain sponsorship assistance. Player fees will be due at the beginning of the season and reimbursements will be issued as fundraisers are completed. Basically, be prepared to pay the fee up front, then we will all work hard to earn it back.

Team Fees Cover the Following:
- All league entry fees
- Insurance required by the league
- Rink practice time (2+ per week during the season)
- Hotel rooms on road trips
- Team equipment (pants and jerseys) - These items are purchased at deeply discounted "team rates" and the items become the players property at the end of the season!

How is the Team Selected
Prior to the beginning of Fall semester, optional weekly "Captain's Practices" will be scheduled for athletes to attend and prepare for try-outs. These practices will continue once the semester has begun. The intensity of these skates will be gradually increased as try-outs near. In mid-September try-outs will be scheduled. This will consist of a series of skates until the roster is determined by the coaching staff. The FSURHC maintains a STRICT open tryout policy. This means that all roster positions are open at try-outs. No position is "guaranteed" to a returning player. To get more details about the practice and try-out schedule, please check out our message forum.
Interested in the team, but you don't attend FSU yet?
There is no better time than now to contact the FSURHC and let them know you are considering FSU. Feel free to ask questions about FSU, or our program. And most importantly, get on our mailing list so that you are notified of summer practices prior to the beginning of the season.
Are try-outs only in the fall?
No. According to the NCRHA rules, once determined, our roster is locked and new players cannot be added during the course of the season. However, there is an open period in January (between semesters) in which changes to the roster can be made. At the coaches discretion, the team MAY hold another try-out at this time. This try-out may be held to back fill roster positions for injured players, or to restructure the team.
What is the talent level in the NCRHA
This is tough question to answer because it is relative to the level of hockey that you are accustomed to. For the most part, the level of play in the NCRHA "A" division is equivalent or above the "Gold" or "Platinum" levels at a Narch tournament. HOWEVER, if you don't feel you are at this level, do NOT let this deter you from attending our program's tryouts. Based on the talent level at try outs, and the number of athletes that try out, the program may elect to roster a "B" team. While the "B" league is still extremely competitive, this division of play is a close equivalent to a Silver or Gold level at Narch. We may also roster a "C" team, or "Rec" team that competes in the men's league at our home rink. This program would act as a feeding system to the "A" and "B" teams for future seasons.
